(Reuters) – A Kent school teacher has been arrested and charged with the murder of two students who were killed in a classroom accident on their way home from a basketball game, the Kent school system said on Thursday.
A Kent school official said the man was being held in lieu of $50,000 bond and that police have identified him as John C. Smith, 52.
Kent Superintendent Dan Sperling told a news conference he was not sure how the school system would fund the charges against Smith, who is in custody in Kansas City.
The incident occurred on March 6 and the two students, a 17-year-old boy and a 16-year old girl, died.
A police report said the student had been hit by Smith’s car, and the other victim suffered multiple head injuries.
Kent’s chief deputy district attorney said Smith was involved in the fatal accident but declined to say how.
