Driving school is an annual event in the Mesa Public Schools District of Cherokee County.
The event is held in the town of La Porte, just south of Interstate 10.
“You want to take the kids, the adults and just do the whole thing,” says Elie Sanchez, a teacher at the school.
Sanchez says the main event is the shooting of a selfie.
“This is just so much fun, just the camaraderie and the campervan, the kids running around, and just having fun,” she says.
Sanchez is not the only one with a passion for the event.
The Mesa Community College is sponsoring a shooting competition.
“I think it’s a very important event,” says instructor Jami Miller.
Miller is one of the organizers.
“It’s so important to get kids out and be active, and this is a chance for them to have fun,” Miller says.
It’s also a chance to learn about how to get people involved.
Miller and Sanchez both say they were inspired by a selfie taken by a friend in the middle of a school shooting.
“My friend was on the phone to someone in the school, and they said ‘Hey, you can shoot a picture of me, and then you can tell me if I’m okay,'” Sanchez says.
“And I’m like, ‘I can’t do that, I can’t, I’m not that kind of person.'”
Sanchez says that person was also in a vehicle, so Sanchez got involved.
“We were just like, if we can make a photo, we can show people what the school is like,” she said.
Students at the Mesas schools take part in a driving school event.
(CBC)The competition is part of a project that’s been created by the Mesacompean Education Foundation.
It includes a shooting simulator, where participants learn how to shoot the most iconic images from the school’s history.
“That’s kind of the fun of the competition,” Miller explains.
“There’s a lot of photos in the pictures that I know from school.
And I’ll put them on my iPhone and take a picture from there,” she adds.
Miller said the competition also includes a photo of a man holding a gun.
“It’s kind and sweet,” Sanchez says of the photo.
“The most important thing about that photo is that it is the most famous shot in the history of school.”
